Herbalism is another gathering profession that allows you to gather herbs for use in other professions and recipes. It is complementary with Alchemy but can also be taken simply for gathering and selling.
Nothing is required for Herbalism other than the skill. You can find herbs along the ground, near trees and other areas while you are questing. The higher level the herb, the higher the zone it will be found in and the higher level the corresponding mobs of the area will be.
With herbalism, you will get the ability "track herbs". When you turn this on, it places a yellow dot on your minimap wherever an herb is located to help you spot them better. As you move up in progression, the herbs become more difficult to see with your eye so the Track Herbs feature will be very helpful. Many high level herbs blend into their environment so well that it is very hard to see them even when standing right on top of them.
Here is a list of the herbs found in the game and the level required to pick them:
- Peacebloom 1
- Silverleaf 1
- Earthroot 15
- Mageroyal 50
- Briarthorn 70
- Stranglekelp 85
- Bruiseweed 100
- Wild Steelbloom 115
- Gravemoss 120
- Kingsblood 125
- Liferoot 150
- Goldthorn 170
- Khadgar's whisker 185
- Wintersbite 195
- Firebloom 205
- Purple lotus 210
- Arthas tears 220
- Sungrass 230
- Blindweed 235
- Ghost mushroom 245

- Golden sansan 260
- Dreamfoil 270
- Mountain silversage 280
- Plaguebloom 285
- Icecap 290
- Black lotus 300
If you are already higher level and have a mount, it is very easy to travel the world, hitting each zone and picking until your maximum skill is reached. If you are lower level, you have to do it as you level up unless you have a high level that is willing to escort you through the high level zones while you pick, killing the nearby mobs for you.

Peacebloom & Silverleaf:
Peacebloom and Silverleaf are both highly abundant in the starter zones. You can pick any starter zone of your choice and you are likely to find tons of these herbs there. If you are higher level, the mobs will not even agro to you and you can simply run through and pick what you want.
Earthroot:
Earthroot is found in newbie areas as well. It can be found on rocky oucroppings: mountain sides, hills, or any other rocky area. Dun Modr near the quarry is a good place for Earthroot and in Durotar around the rides and rocks or in Barrens near the mountains for Horde.
Mageroyal:
Mageroyal is rarer. Good places to find it our on the coast of Westfall, guarded by the Murlocs, in the Barrens, usually in the middle of plains areas, and also some in the Wetlands usually in the green, grassy areas.
Briarthorn:
Found like silverleaf, along trees and tree stumps or other objects. Look in the Barrens, Silverpine Forest, Stonetalon Mountains and Darkshore.
Swiftthistle:
It is found with Mageroyal and Briarthorn! When you pick them, you have a chance to get a swiftthistle with it.
Stranglekelp:
Found underwater or on the coastlines of beaches. Underwater breathing makes hunting this a breeze. Look along the coasts of Darkshore, STV and Wetlands.
Bruiseweed:
This is most often found in rocky areas. Search Silverpine Forest, Stonetalon Mountains, Hillsbrad Foothills and Westfall in low, rocky areas for Bruiseweed.
Wild Steelbloom:
Hard to find, especially in large quantities. Usually found on top of mountains. Look around Thousand Needles, Hillsbrad Foothills, Duskwood and even parts of the Barrens on hills.
Grave Moss:
Grave Moss grows in graveyards and crypts. Look at Ironbeard's Tomb in the Wetlands, Raven Hill Cemetery in Duskwood, and the graveyard in Scarlet Monastery.
Kingsblood:
This herb also grows out in the open, like Peacebloom, but usually away from roads and cities. The Wetlands is very abundant in Kingsblood, especially out in the grassy areas. Also try, Ashenvale, Duskwood and the Barrens.
Liferoot:
Liferoot is found in moist ground like swamps, marshes, and along rivers and streams. Good places to find this herb include the Wetlands and Hillsbrad. Also try STV, Wailing Caverns and Arathi Highlands.
Fadeleaf:
Search for Fadeleaf throughout the Hinterlands, the Badlands, and the Highlands.
Goldthorn:
Goldthorn is found like Earthroot in mid-level (30-40) zones, on rocky outcrops. Stranglethorn Vale, the Hinterlands, the Arathi Highlands, and the outskirts of the Swamp of Sorrows all have Goldthorn.
Khadgar's Whisker:
Look for this in the troll village in Arathi, over different places in STV, in the Badlands, and in the Hinterlands. Also look in Dustwallow Marsh.
Wintersbite:
This herb grows in only one zone: Alterac Mountains. Look for it in the snowy area of the Alterac Mountains.
Firebloom:
Firebloom grows all around in hot areas. It can be found out in the open in zones like the Blasted Lands, the Badlands, Searing Gorge, and Tanaris.
Purple Lotus:
Purple Lotus can be found in a variety of zones, from as low as Ashenvale to as high as Azshara and Dire Maul.
Wildvine:
Wildvine is a rare pick that comes along with Purple Lotus. It also drops from many trolls and plant elementals.
Arthas' Tears:
These are found in Plaguelands and Felwood.
Sungrass:
Look in the Blasted Lands, Azshara, Feralas, and the Hinterlands as well as Western Plaguelands and Felwood if you are higher level.
Blindweed:
Swamp of Sorrows and Un'Goro are the only place to find this herb and it is most abundant and easiest to get in Swamp of Sorrows.
Ghost Mushroom:
Sometimes (rarely) found in Arathi Highlands. Also found underground Skulk Rock in the Hinterlands. Best places to find are in Maraudon and Dire Maul.
Gromsblood:
Gromsblood grows in demonic areas, and usually high-level ones. Search in Mannoroc Coven in southern Desolace, Felwood and the Blasted Lands.
Golden Sansam:
Golden Sansamis found in zones like Un'goro Crater, Felwood, and the Eastern Plaguelands.
Dreamfoil:
Dreamfoil is found in high-level zones like the Plaguelands, Silithus, Felwood, and Azshara.
Mountain Silversage:
The best place to find it: Un'goro Crater. Also look in Felwood, although it is rare.
Plaguebloom:
Plaguebloom is found in plagued areas: The Plaguelands and Felwood.
Icecap:
Found only in Winterspring and occasionally Alterac Valley.
Black Lotus:
The rarest herb, it requires level 300 to pick, and is green quality. Only one Black Lotus will be picked at any single herbal node. These plants are found infrequently in some high-end zones like Burning Steppes and Winterspring.
That will take you to 300 herbalism. If you have the expansion, you can train to pick past to a cap of 375 in the Outlands.
It is typically best to take your herbalism up to about 330-345 by staying in Felwood and farming the same herbs you previously have picked. You will still skill up on these and you avoid the swarms of people in the Outlands. Many herbs should still be yellow/green to you:
- Plaguebloom
- Dreamfoil
- Mountain Silversage
- Sungrass
- Arthas' Tears
- Purple Lotus
Now if you have maxed herbalism at about 345 and felwood herbs are going grey to you, it's time to head to the Outlands and Zangarmarsh. There are TONS or herbs in this area to help you max out your herbalism.
You will find a lot ofFelweed and Ragveil, with occasional Dreamfoil and Dreaming Glory. |
